Everyone who uses a vehicle on the road is required to keep it in a roadworthy condition. The roadworthiness is checked in the interests of road safety and the environment by the Ministry OTransportation test (MOT).The first test is required once a vehicle is 3 years old (However there are different rules if you use it as a taxi). The MOT looks at some important items on your car to see that it meets key legal requirements when it is tested. A MOT tests the general health of the vehicle and its parts ensuring that it is roadworthy and meets the DVSA’s legal safety and environmental requirements

What Our Customers Say

Phil B – Portsmouth

I have been using JKM for all my car servicing and repairs for over ten years. Although they specialise in VAG cars, they’re also good with other makes. Very trustworthy and honest about what needs doing. Better than VW on diagnosis and repair from my experience.

Mun Cheung – Portsmouth

These guys 100% know what they are doing. I usually come to these guys for the big bad problems that I can’t fix myself and they always come through for me. Looked after my Corrado G60 and now Audi S4 with care and attention. Super friendly and knowledgeable. Worth the money.

Most Frequently Asked questions about Car MOTs

Yes all MOT’s need to be pre-booked. Just call or email and we can arrange a convenient date for you

You can present your car for its MOT up to 1 month, minus a day before your expiry date. For example, if your MOT is due on 15th August, the earliest you can present the car for MOT is 16th July

No you do not need to bring any paperwork with you as all records are digitally stored by DVSA so we will know when your MOT is due to expire.

An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. If you are unsure, either call us or check via the DVSA checker site: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk  We provide free MOT reminders for all of our customer’s vehicles, sent by email or text.

You can be fined up to £1000 for driving a vehicle on the road without an MOT. If your MOT has expired you can drive it to the test station providing we have you booked in the diary.

Don’t worry you can print one for free via the DVSA website https://www.gov.uk/replacing-lost-damaged-mot-certificate

The main difference is that an MOT is compulsory whereas a service isn’t. The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check that they meet the legal standards. It isn’t the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesn’t check its general mechanical condition.
A MOT tests the general health of the vehicle and its parts ensuring that it is roadworthy and meets the DVSA’s legal safety and environmental requirements. A service checks the vehicles mechanical condition and has additional checks which are not part of the MOT test.

Our current charge for an MOT is £44.95 (There is no VAT on our MOT fee) and if you have the vehicle repaired with us, you can get it re-tested and passed with us for free.

We can provide you with an estimate to repair and if you wish to go ahead, we can get it repaired, re-tested and passed. There is no MOT re-test fee for vehicles repaired on site by us.
