Replacing an air filter is one of the easiest ways of improving a car's performance. The basic principle is that by increasing the airflow through the engine, this will result in an increase in power. By letting the air enter more freely (performance air filter) this is a good starting point.

Performance air filter manufactures aim to increase the overall flow of air but without seriously reducing the filtration properties of their products.
The simplest performance filters are relatively cheap, very easy to install and have a moderate effect on performance - perhaps a couple of BHP on top of the standard maximum power figure, depending on the individual vehicle.

Performance air filters work well in conjunction with other tuning items such as exhaust systems, however they are less effective than complete cold air induction kits such as Carbonio as these replace most of the standard air induction system.
